We love a weekend bike ride with the whole family, getting out in nature and spending time together, but staying safe is key to having a good time. Here are our tips for safety first when you’re out riding with your kids…

SAFETY FIRST: KEEP YOUR KIDS SAFE WHILE RIDING.

Staying safe while you’re out riding should be your top priority, not just for kids but for adults, too. Here’s what you can consider for your little humans to make sure you’re staying as safe as you can.

Starting from the top
Heard of the song head, shoulders, knees and toes? Well, we’re starting at the top. Having a good helmet that is well-fitting makes the world of difference should you have a fall or a wobbly moment. It’s thought that wearing a helmet can reduce head injury by between 65% and 88%.

Helmets should cover most of your child’s forehead, and you can check the fit by putting your middle and forefinger together on the forehead, and you want the helmet to touch your fingers for a good fit.

Layering up
Next up we have those shoulders, knees, and toes to consider, but let’s zoom in on two bits in particular, the elbows and the knees. Safety pads are great for adding cushioning and support for your small people, as well as giving them a boost of confidence in their own abilities.

Although not totally necessary, they’re definitely a consideration if you want to head out and have some family cycling fun.

Getting visible
Getting visible wherever you are riding needs to be a top consideration, and you can look at things like high vis vests and stickers as well as lights for the bikes. Reflectors and flashing lights are popular picks as they sit in the bike, but you want to make sure that you have all angles covered.

Learning the ropes
Being aware of your surroundings is one of the biggest ways you can stay safe, so talking to your kids about the dangers and things to consider, as well as helping them understand the ropes of riding. From traffic awareness to staying together, teaching them the ways of the road and the ways of the trail is so important to get them confident and safe on their bikes.

Family rides are fun for everyone, but make sure you’re ready to rock and ride by ticking off these safety factors.
